For transforming grassroots healthcare through the Cleft and Facial Deformity Foundation, offering over 2,600 free surgeries nationwide and running an innovative outreach model which integrates surgery, education and rehabilitation, restoring dignity to marginalized patients while advancing equitable, community-based and sustainable healthcare delivery across Nigeria, Dr Seidu Adebayo Bello is LEADERSHIP Primary Healthcare Model of the Year.

Dr Seidu Adebayo Bello is a surgeon and the director, Cleft and Facial Deformity Foundation (CFDF). An accomplished oral and maxillofacial surgeon, he is also a passionate humanitarian. As the director of the CFDF, Dr Bello has transformed the lives of thousands of Nigerians born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities — individuals who once faced stigma, social isolation and despair.

Over the course of his career spanning more than three decades, Dr Bello has built an extraordinary legacy rooted in service, innovation and compassion. Through the Cleft and Facial Deformity Foundation, he has taken specialised healthcare to the grass roots, providing free reconstructive surgeries to indigent patients across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. To date, the Foundation has carried out over 2,600 complex surgical procedures.

Dr Seidu Adebayo Bello philosophy of healthcare delivery is founded on the belief that quality medical care should not be a privilege but a right accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status or geography. His outreach model, which integrates surgery, community sensitisation and post-operative rehabilitation, represents a replicable framework for primary healthcare impact in low-resource settings. By partnering with state governments, teaching hospitals and local communities, his Foundation has created sustainable medical missions that reach people in the most underserved regions where healthcare infrastructure is weak and specialists are scarce.

His approach goes beyond surgery. Each outreach involves screening, counselling, nutrition support and follow-up care, ensuring that patients receive holistic attention. Families are educated about the causes and management of cleft conditions, thereby addressing the myths and stigma that have for decades surrounded these congenital deformities. This community-driven health education component has proven critical in reducing misconceptions and promoting early presentation, especially among rural populations.

Dr Seidu Adebayo Bello professional journey reflects excellence in clinical practice, leadership and medical education. He currently serves as the consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon and director of Maxillofacial Surgery at the State House Medical Centre, Asokoro, Abuja, where he leads a team dedicated to high-quality patient care and surgical innovation.

He is a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCDS), the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (FICOI), and the Global Congress of Implantology (FGCOI). As an examiner with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons, Dr Bello has mentored and assessed countless young surgeons, contributing immensely to the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery in West Africa.

Dr Seidu Adebayo Bello is a multiple award winner and an academic par excellence. In addition to the regular training at his International Craniofacial Academy (ICA), Abuja, he has published over 35 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

He is also a community man, an emeritus PTA chairman of his children’s school, currently the Abuja chairman of Oke Ogun Development Forum, and the Aare Musulumi of Ago Are land, his native town.

Beyond the operating theatre, Dr Bello has been an advocate for surgical education and policy reform, emphasising the need for capacity-building and equitable access to specialised care. His passion for developing the next generation of surgeons has earned him respect as both a clinician and an educator.

Founded in 2010, the Cleft and Facial Deformity Foundation has become one of Nigeria’s most effective non-governmental healthcare initiatives. Under Dr Bello’s leadership, CFDF has organised more than 50 surgical missions across the country, collaborating with both local and international partners to deliver high-quality, free medical interventions.

In a healthcare environment often hampered by limited government funding and infrastructure deficits, CFDF stands out as a model of public-private partnership for healthcare delivery. Its impact extends beyond medical treatment; the Foundation has empowered communities through health education, volunteer training and capacity-building for local health workers.

Through its sustained work, CFDF has directly contributed to achieving key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing) and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), by ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to life-changing health services.

Dr Seidu Adebayo Bello humanitarian service has not gone unnoticed. His Foundation has received commendations from professional bodies, traditional rulers and state governments for its outstanding contributions to public health and social development. Beyond the numbers, his work tells human stories — stories of children who can now smile confidently, of mothers who once hid their babies out of shame, and of families whose lives have been transformed forever.

His outreach programmes have affected communities in Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Cross River, Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Niger and the Federal Capital Territory, among others. Each mission is characterised by empathy, professionalism and meticulous planning, bringing together volunteer surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and social workers who share in his vision of restoring hope through healing.

As a senior health professional working within and beyond government institutions, Dr Bello represents the bridge between policy and practice. His role at the State House Medical Centre underscores his technical expertise and leadership in shaping healthcare service delivery at the highest level of government. Yet, his enduring passion lies in community service, ensuring that the same quality of care available to the privileged few is extended to those who can least afford it.

Through advocacy and collaboration, Dr Bello continues to engage with policymakers, donors and the medical community to strengthen Nigeria’s surgical ecosystem and promote indigenous solutions to local health challenges. Through his compassion, professionalism and visionary leadership, Dr Bello continues to redefine what it means to serve — healing faces, restoring smiles and rebuilding lives across Nigeria. His legacy stands as a testament to what one man’s vision, guided by purpose and powered by empathy, can achieve in transforming healthcare for the common good.

Dr Seidu Adebayo Bello work epitomises the values that the LEADERSHIP Awards stand for: innovation, excellence and service to humanity. His life and career demonstrate that transformative healthcare is achievable when vision meets compassion. He has used his professional skill not merely as a vocation but as a vehicle for social change, touching lives across class, culture and creed.

As an advocate of equity in healthcare, he has inspired a generation of medical professionals to see beyond the walls of hospitals and extend healing to communities in need. His model of community-based surgical outreach continues to serve as a primary healthcare innovation, proving that specialised care can indeed be integrated into grassroots health delivery systems.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to public health, his unwavering dedication to the service of humanity and his pioneering work in expanding access to reconstructive and facial surgery for underserved Nigerians, we proudly honour Dr Seidu Adebayo Bello with the LEADERSHIP Award for Primary Healthcare Model of the Year.
