For his transformative governance in Imo State through strategic infrastructural renewal, education reform, digital empowerment and healthcare delivery; for repositioning Imo as a progressive state with efforts like the Skill-Up Imo project, which has trained 50,000 youths in digital skills, and major road reconstructions, security interventions, and institutional upgrades that have restored stability and growth, among others, Hope Odidikanwa Uzodimma is LEADERSHIP Governor of the Year 2025.
Governor Hope Odidikanwa Uzodimma was born on December 12, 1958, in Omuma, Imo State, Nigeria. The current governor of Imo State was elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Before he became governor, he was a two-time senator who represented Imo West (Orlu Zone) from 2011 to 2019. Uzodimma assumed office on January 15, 2020, as governor of Imo State amidst criticism over the process of his victory, but he has gradually warmed himself into the hearts of many. For Governor Hope Uzodimma, patience has probably been his biggest strength, as he has over time cleared the doubts of many.
Upon assumption of office as governor on January 15, 2020, he shocked political watchers by paying the January salary to appointees of the immediate past administration he took over from. That singular act showed a part many didn’t know and earned him respect in political circles.
Shortly afterward, he approved the provision of buses to convey civil servants from different parts of the state to the State Secretariat, a gesture that saved several workers from lateness or even the worry of transportation fares. The air-conditioned luxury buses still ply the roads to date.
Having assumed office in the heat of the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown, Uzodimma provided support to several people through their different organizations, including the Christian and Muslim communities, helping people to cushion the situation. Uzodimma restored promotion within the state civil service, a gesture that reflects excellence and growth. Until then, workers were stuck on the same level for years.
In education, Hope Odidikanwa Uzodimma has done the unthinkable. Following outrage over state resources converted to private use, Uzodimma stood tall to retrieve the Eastern Palm University, Ogboko, in Ideato South, built by the past government with state funds but converted to a private university. He stood firm, pulled all the strings, and today it has been renamed Kingsley O. Mbadiwe University, Ogboko.
Due to the withdrawal of accreditation for Medicine and Surgery at the state-owned Imo State University, which left many medical students stranded for years, Uzodimma, with his Midas touch, liaised with the appropriate authorities, and, today, the university is reaccredited and has been churning out medical doctors for the teeming population.
On his watch, the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, was upgraded to a full-fledged University of Education, with Prof. Stella Lemchi as its first indigenous vice-chancellor.
Not done with that, he was instrumental in the upgrade of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, into the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri, a centre for the medical students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri.
Today, Imo State boasts of the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), several nursing schools upgraded, alongside the Imo State University and the Imo State Polytechnic, Omuma.
One of Hope Odidikanwa Uzodimma remarkable achievements is the restoration of free flow of traffic on the ever-busy Douglas Road. For several years, Douglas Road was an eyesore, with mountains of debris dumped by unscrupulous traders. The same traders abandoned their shops and chose to display their wares on the road, while pickpockets had a field day.
However, all that has changed, as Uzodimma, against all odds, has restored free flow of traffic on the once chaotic road, even as traders have been forced to return to the markets.
As chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, the umbrella body for governors under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Uzodimma has roused his party to make great inroads into the zone and, by extension, the country.
Only recently, he shut down over 25 states and brought President Bola Tinubu and 26 governors to Imo State for the unveiling of his book titled “A Decade of Impactful Progressive Governance in Nigeria”, which chronicles the history of APC’s 10-year administration.
At the same event, President Tinubu commissioned a twin flyover at Assumpta Roundabout to ease traffic congestion for travellers who had to pass through the spot to access other parts of the state. Although they are federal roads — the Owerri–Okigwe, Owerri–Mbaise–Umuahia, Owerri–Orlu, Orlu–Ugah–Akokwa roads — Uzodimma has reconstructed them all and is currently working on the Owerri–Omarelu Road. These roads have eased the trauma of users, stopped road attacks, and restored safety on the highways.
Determined to improve the digital skills of his people, Hope Odidikanwa Uzodimma did the unimaginable. Imo State has trained a whopping 50,000 people in different skills under the Skill-Up Imo project. Under cohorts 1, 2, and 3, people have received training in various fields like software engineering, AI, cybersecurity, and digital marketing, with many of them either gainfully employed in digital technology outside Imo State or self-employed. It is important to add that the Skill-Up Imo graduates all received laptops and other tools to aid their newly acquired skills.
After the break-in at the Owerri Correctional Centre in April 2021, hoodlums tried to overrun the state — but not under Uzodimma. Today, communities hitherto controlled by insurgents have been fully reclaimed. Normal activities are gradually returning in places like Orsu and Okigwe local government areas. Uzodimma has donated several security vehicles and gadgets to the police and Nigerian Army.
The Imo State governor has sponsored pilgrimages to Israel for hundreds of people. He has done the same for the Muslim community in the state. Under Uzodimma, healthcare delivery has enjoyed a major boost with the introduction of the Imo State Health Insurance Scheme, a platform that has drastically reduced maternal and child mortality in the state.
Only recently, Imo State was celebrated as the Best Health Insurance and Managed Care Government Agency in Provider Network and Performance Management 2025.
